Magalia was established in 1849 after the California Gold Rush and was originally named Mountain View. In 1850 a large dog breeding operation was established in Magalia and became known as dogtown for approximately a decade. In 1861 the name of the town became Magalia which is the Latin word for cottages.

In April of 1959, a 54-pound gold nugget was discovered in Magalia, which was the largest golden nugget in the world at that time. Found on the Williard Claim, a hydraulic mine in the Feather Valley, it was called the “Dogtown nugget.” This discovery made the town of Magalia famous.

Magalia is now home to approximately 15,000 residents and is consistently increasing due to the desirable climate conditions. Magalia has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate that is ideal for growing fruit, almonds and walnuts.
