Paradise, CA is an incorporated town in the Sierra Nevada foothills above the northeastern Sacramento Valley. Paradise is considered part of the Chico metropolitan area. The 30,000+ residents of Paradise account for a substantial portion of the 200,000+ people in the Chico metropolitan area.
Paradise is known for two very severe wildfires that caused extensive damage to the wilderness surrounding the town. In June of 2008 a wildfire named the “Humboldt Fire” destroyed approximately 23,000 acres of land. The “Camp Fire” happened the following month in July 2008 and devastated thousands of acres of property. Both wildfires required thousands of people to be evacuated from their homes.
Several stories exist about how the town of Paradise got its name, but none of these myths have been authenticated. Some people believe there was a saloon in the town named “Pair o’ Dice” that prompted the name. Others say it was the clean mountain air and surroundings that prompted people to say, “ This is like Paradise.”
