Durham, CA was an experimental cooperative agricultural colony established under the 1917 California State and Settlement Act. Durham’s warm-summer Mediterranean climate made it an ideal area for growing almonds and walnuts.
Durham was founded by the Durham Family and named for W. W. Durham, a California State Assembly member. The Durham House is still standing today as a reminder of what Durham was back in its early years. Durham is a town in which a railroad ran through and still does today. The railroad is what developed this town and kept it alive. The Durham Flour Mill, which burned down several times, was an essential part of this community. Durham covers over 80,000 square miles of real estate and is the place over 7,000 residents call home.
